One of my MOST FAVOURITE Bakeries anywhere- EVER!!! For context: I live in London and eat out a lot at some of the best restaurants and bakeries in the city — so I don’t say this lightly. Motto Brot completely won me over. First: the banana cake. If you notice multiple photos in my review, yes… they are from different days. We went here every single day for a week — often twice a day — and I ordered the banana cake repeatedly… including one more on the way to the airport. It’s that good. It’s an absolutely elegant little cake — truly one of the most beautiful desserts I’ve ever seen. Perfect texture, deeply flavoured, not overly sweet, and incredibly refined. Honestly, everything in the pastry case is gorgeous — like the Sydney Opera House of desserts. And importantly: the banana cake is gluten free, which makes it even more of a gift. The pistachio and raspberry cake (the red dome in the photo) is also gluten free and fantastic: a soft pistachio cake topped with a beautiful dome of bright, tangy raspberry — see the photo — which balances everything perfectly. I generally choose to eat gluten free, though I will absolutely make exceptions when something is worth it — and this bakery made it easy either way with excellent gluten-free options alongside their beautiful traditional pastries. Even the savoury side surprised us. The ham sandwich — with butter, pickle, horseradish and beautiful ham — was honestly one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. Simple ingredients, incredible bread, perfectly executed. And the coffee is outstanding. I know it sounds almost ridiculous that so many things in one place could be this good — but truly, everything we had here was excellent. The whole place has such a strong point of view — the branding and design are fantastic. I even tried to buy one of their t-shirts so I could properly represent back in London, but they were out of my size… which I’m still genuinely sad about. Now that I’m home, I’m kicking myself that we didn’t try every single thing in the case. Also… a 4.1 rating is a travesty. This place deserves to be much higher on the list of Vienna bakeries.
