A first-time visit to Miller & Carter and my only question is: why have I denied myself this joy for so long? Who hurt me? Why did nobody stage an intervention? The restaurant itself is old. And I mean proper old. Apparently, dating back to the 16th century. That’s older than sliced bread. Older than forks being socially acceptable. It’s obviously been updated since then (no plague, which is a plus), but it’s still packed with charm and beautiful low wooden beams. Now, as a tall person, let me offer some advice: duck. Duck like you’re in The Matrix. Duck like the beams owe you money. Those beams have been there since Tudor times and they are not moving for you. The food? Absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection. The kind of meal where you pause mid-bite just to nod at the table like, “Yes. This. This is correct.” The menu is huge too, so many options that even the most indecisive among us (me) can eventually commit without breaking into a mild panic. Now, full disclosure: I’m not a steak fan. I know. Going to a steakhouse when you don’t like steak feels rebellious. Borderline chaotic. But fear not, there are loads of other options, and they are excellent. You will not be sat there chewing a lettuce leaf in protest. Also, if you’re gluten free, rejoice! They have a dedicated gluten-free menu with loads of choices. Not the sad “here’s a salad, good luck” situation. An actual proper menu. With options. Plural. So, great venue. Incredible food. Full range of drinks. Everything’s ticking boxes. But what about the staff, Dave? I hear you cry. Relax. The staff were brilliant. Friendly, helpful, and genuinely lovely. But one person deserves a standing ovation: Nicola. She was our waitress for the evening and honestly, we struck gold. Attentive without hovering. Friendly without forcing it. The kind of service that makes you wonder if she’s secretly reading your mind. Nicola, if you’re reading this, thank you. You were fantastic. We appreciate you more than you know. Safe to say, we will absolutely be back. And soon. Possibly with crash helmets for the beams. In the meantime, if you’re looking for lunch or dinner, you genuinely can’t go wrong pulling up here. Just remember to duck.
