The short version: Koguma (仔ぐま) is an excellent place to get okonomiyaki, especially if you’re gluten-free. Ken, the owner, is a friendly and charismatic host. He will happily talk with you through his translating device, accommodating any type of foreigner. This will be an experience you will never forget. The long version: To get food at Koguma you’ll have to reach out to Ken, the owner, in advance. It is worth the effort, as doing so will set you up for an intimate and entirely unique dining experience. As Ken makes the okonomiyaki, he will chat with you through a translation device he has. Ken told us the story of how his restaurant came to be, the history of okonomiyaki, as well as some history about Hiroshima itself. The food was great, and Ken’s charisma and service made everything even better. He’s an advocate for those with allergies, as he has recently developed a gluten allergy himself. This may be the only gluten-free okonomiyaki place in Hiroshima. I highly recommend Koguma to anyone looking to try okonomiyaki, especially those sensitive to gluten. Ken will provide a memorable experience—he’s the best!

We found this restaurant while on our way to our hotel on Miyajimaguchi. We stopped to see if we could get gluten free okonomiyaki. I showed my celiac card and there was no problem! Later on, we found out that reservations are actually required for the gluten free one (we feel a bit about that). The chef started making our food, while giving us background information on the okonomiyaki and on the history of the restaurant, using a translating device. It was such a nice experience!! After finishing our meal, we even got some extra sauce as the chef knew it is hard to find gluten free sauce in Japan. Such a sweet gesture ;).
