The best chicken burger I've eaten in Japan, full stop. Loco Chicken in Kyoto's Kawaramachi district is a tiny counter-only spot with just four seats, built around the Hawaiian tradition of mochiko chicken: thigh meat marinated in lemon, Hawaiian sea salt, ginger and garlic, then coated in sweet rice flour and fried in rice oil until the crust is shattering-crispy and the inside stays cloud-soft and juicy. We ordered three burgers between two of us. The Caesar was the unanimous favourite: white miso Caesar sauce, snow-grated Parmesan, mizuna, and Kyoto radish pickles stacked over a perfect mochiko patty, all of it bright, salty, and elegant. The Loco Essence was the wild card: mochiko chicken glazed in black molasses and red miso, topped with melted cheddar and yuzu emulsion. Strange on paper, genuinely compelling on the plate. That dark, lacquered glaze has the depth of an unagi tare and the kind of flavour that takes a moment to place but refuses to be forgotten. The habanero Kyoto burger delivered a slow, genuine heat. The matcha lemonade is a must, it was sooo good The atmosphere is snug, warm, and lit like a quiet izakaya. We ended up chatting with two British fellow travellers at the counter who'd made the trip specifically for the gluten-free menu (all chicken is naturally GF; the rice buns are an extra 240 yen and completely worth it). Service was unhurried, generous, and proud of the food. At around 1,000 to 1,300 yen per burger, this is some of the best value eating in Kyoto. Go early or expect to wait outside. A very easy five stars.

Il miglior hamburger di pollo di sempre. Tutto è cotto alla perfezione. Anche il loro bun di riso mochi senza glutine è perfetto (vedi foto). Abbiamo deciso di mangiare qui quasi ogni giorno mentre siamo a Kyoto. È fantastico che offrano anche la possibilità di asporto, poiché la loro esperienza di ristorazione è piuttosto intima e si riempie rapidamente. L'asporto è stato veloce e ben confezionato. Le anelli di cipolla come condimento aggiuntivo erano troppo buoni per essere trascurati in ogni occasione. Amiamo questi hamburger, grazie Loco Chicken!
