GLUTEN FREE Let me preface this by saying that until today, this was my go-to sushi place in the city regarding gluten-free options. From the very first time, they seemed attentive and aware of celiac disease, and above all, the fact that for someone with celiac disease, even a simple contamination can represent a serious issue. Unfortunately, after today's experience, I have to reconsider. I had ordered a dish that included kataifi, an ingredient I was not familiar with until today and which contains gluten. Usually, when I order gluten-free, unsuitable ingredients are simply omitted, just as happens with many sauces, to make the dishes safe for those with celiac disease. When the dish arrived, I noticed the presence of kataifi and asked the waitress if it was gluten-free. I was told yes and was reassured that I could eat it without worry. Fortunately, I am quite skeptical when it comes to my health, and after a quick check, I found out that kataifi does indeed contain gluten. At that point, I called the attention of the dining room manager, who was fully aware that this ingredient contained gluten. He then took back the dish, telling me it would be redone. I thought the issue was resolved. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The dish was brought back to me, but instead of being made fresh, the kataifi had simply been removed. I noticed this because some small pieces remained on the plate. For someone with celiac disease, it’s not enough to just take the gluten-containing ingredient out of a contaminated dish. The problem is precisely the contamination, and it is therefore necessary to prepare the dish again in safe conditions. Thankfully, I noticed this a second time and did not eat it. I brought the incident to the attention of another waitress, who apologized. I appreciate the apology, but in a situation like this, the problem isn’t just receiving a wrong dish: we are talking about a person’s health and the concrete risk of making a celiac customer ill. At that point, my hunger had completely passed and I didn’t eat anything else. At the cash register, we were given a total discount of €10 as a gesture of apology. However, the point is not at all the discount: such a situation is much more serious and cannot be compensated financially. I am particularly sorry because until today I had always found it to be a reliable place for gluten-free options, but after what happened, they have lost my trust and, unfortunately, also a customer. If you are celiac, be very careful and always ensure that those who take and prepare the order truly understand what it means to avoid not only gluten but any contamination.
