I am currently in this place asking for a chicken without the bread underneath. I am asked if I have celiac disease. (Aside from the fact that this is a sensitive health matter that I might not want to disclose for privacy reasons, I know what I can and cannot eat.) Stupidly, I reply that I am not celiac, and that I wouldn't have asked to remove the bread underneath because I am aware of the contamination, but that I am gluten-sensitive. I don't want to explain my clinical condition to a stranger and that my diet must strictly avoid direct gluten introduction (pasta, bread, etc.) for an anti-inflammatory protocol. Also, I don't like sharing my personal matters and feel uncomfortable. I just want a chicken without bread, and I am not celiac! But they say they can't give it to me because they don't want to take responsibility and bring me a miserable gluten-free menu with 3 fried items and 6 sandwiches or ice creams that I don't eat. So, no dinner; I stay seated watching my daughters and hope they finish soon so I can leave. I understand the fear and the desire to protect themselves, but if I ask for a chicken without bread underneath and not a gluten-free menu, it means I know what I want and can eat!
